According to the famous German scientific investigator into family names Dr. Hans Bahlow (cf. his booklet 'Deutsches Namenlexikon' [ = German Lexicon of Family Names], Frankfurt/Main 1972, pages 494-495) the family name STACK (written STAAK, STAACK, STAAKE, STACKE, STAKE, as well) is of very old German origin. The meaning of the name is 'lange Stange' [= a long pole resp. stake]. Consulting to our 'white pages' I found that the family name STACK is not wide-spread in Germany.

But we have to keep in mind that in Germany there is the old family name STACH, too. According to our 'white pages' this name is a wide-spread one. The family name STACH is an abbreviation of the name of the Saint Eustachius. As the German CH in the ending of the name STACH is pronounced deeply in the throat (impossible to an American!) we can suppose that every German STACH emigrating to the United States will change his name into STACK [in Germany the A in the name STACK is spoken similar to the English adjective 'stuck'-up]. This is to be considered.
